In July 2005, we traveled to Hong Kong, Tibet, Kathmandu, Bangkok and Singapore.

Shishapangma North 01 03 Labuche Kang From Shishapangma Checkpoint After dinner, I noticed a large white mountain glistening in the evening sun. I used binoculars and pleasantly discovered it was Labuche Kang (7367m, also called Lobuche Kang I or Choksiam). The first ascent of Labuche Kang was by a Chinese-Japanese team led by Yamamori that succeeded in 1987 after a first exploration carried on the year before.

Shishapangma North 01 04 Siling Village House We walked to Siling village and enjoyed strolling around the houses. This is a fairly typical house, with yak dung drying in the foreground to later become fuel. The lower floor is for the animals, the upper floor for the people, and the roof for drying vegetables and spices.

Shishapangma North 01 05 Nomads Near Siling Village As we walked back to the Shishapangma checkpoint guesthouse, we passed by a group of nomads camping next to the river near Siling village.

Shishapangma North 01 07 Shishapangma and Phola Ganchen From North Base Camp We drove to Shishapangma Base Camp (5000m), known locally as Chinese Base Camp, pleasantly situated on grassy patch alongside the river, raging in the monsoon. We waited a few hours, and finally the monsoon clouds lifted for a few minutes. On the left is Phola Ganchen (7661m) and to the right is Shishapangma (8012m).
